Cherry Pie Day: Best Place to Grab A Slice of Pie in Riverside

By Published On: February 20, 2019Categories: Lifestyle

Cherry Pie is as iconic, well almost, like Apple Pie and is it a coincidence that we celebrate Cherry Pie day, just a few days after President’s Day? Maybe it is or maybe not! After all, Cherries were one of President George Washington’s favorite food. Today is one of the best days of the year! Yes, it’s the national holiday not everyone may celebrate, but sure wants to. Here’s your chance. Make THIS the year you celebrate the greatness that is pie. Who doesn’t love pie? Flaky crust, sweet or sour filling. Don’t get me started on with or without whip cream and then there’s ala mode. NEED PIE NOW.  Pies have been served hot or cold since the ancient Greeks created them around the 5th century BC.  We know they made them with sweetmeats, and some filled with fruit. Here are a few things I bet you didn’t know about this savory or sweet classic.

  • The first pies were made with chicken. This was the beginning of what we know as a pot pie.
  • It is believed fruit pies probably originated in England in the early 1500s.
  • The first cherry pie was made for Queen Elizabeth I.

So, whatever you fancy, a slice of sweet pie or savory pie, or heck a slice of each, celebrate today’s holiday by enjoying a slice of pie from one of the fabulous places here in Riverside, California that are known for their amazing pies:

Backstreet Restaurant: 3735 Nelson St. Riverside, CA 92506

For over 50 years the same family has owned and operated Backstreet. Check out the world-famous fresh banana cream pie made daily at Riverside’s best kept secret lunch spot. Bring your puppy and eat outside in their hidden and eclectically decorated garden oasis. You’ll be glad you came. http://www.backstreetriverside.com/

Flo’s Farmhouse Café: 5620 Van Buren Blvd. Riverside, CA 92503

They have Millionaire pie. Enough said. It is pecan plus cream cheese plus chocolate and mousse. Then add 4 inches straight up of whipped cream.  But if that is not your style, they have coconut cream, custard, lemon and fresh apple daily! I recommend the Millionaire pie, but if you are a traditionalist, the apple heated ala mode is to die for. https://www.facebook.com/pages/category/American-Restaurant/Flos-Farmhouse-Cafe-115596748469888/

Jammin’ Bread Bakery and Café: 5225 Canyon Crest Dr #17a, Riverside, CA 92507

Located in the Canyon Crest Towne Center, this place is known to locals for its great breakfasts and quaint vibe. But it’s the pie that keeps them coming back. I recommend the Cherry. The flakey, buttery crust and tart cherry filling warm my soul. Go try them if you are in the Canyon Crest area. Check out Jammin’ Bread Bakery and Cafe.

Do yourself a favor….stop by one of these amazing places and enjoy a slice (or a whole pie) today! You will be so glad you did.
